Carton House itself was begun in 1739, and was designed by the architect Richard Castles, whose other works in Ireland include such prestigious homes as Powerscourt House, Westport House and Leinster House. The house cost 26,000 pounds to build. The boathouse pictured here was built for Englands Queen Victoria for one of her visits to Carton House. The Fitzgeralds, the owners at the time, were informed that the queen had a dream, in which she was rowing a boat on the lake here at the Carton. Eager to please, they built this boathouse and commissioned a special boat for her visit.
