I was born in Dublin in 1945. My father introduced me to photography when I was about 12 year old and I still have my first camera, a Kodak Sterling II folding camera. Right from the start I was encouraged to develop and print my own photographs. Both my mother and father studied art in the Metropolitan School of Art (now the National College of Art and Design) and they encouraged me in drawing, painting, and photography. In my schoolboy years I worked in a photographer’s studio during my summer holidays. I studied architecture in the Dublin Institute of Technology and arts in the Open University. I have a master’s degree in architectural history from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD in architectural history from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. After retiring from the Dublin School of Architecture I completed a BA in photography in the School of Media, Dublin Institute of Technology.
