To my left is the ruin of the flue chimney that lies close to the summit of Carrickgolligan Hill. The site of a former lead mining and smelting centre, the mine opened around 1807 and operated until its closure in 1913. The slopes of Carrickgolligan Hill are now heavily wooded with starkly symmetrical
evergreens, commercially planted to replace man’s earlier activity. Yet nature’s forces still assert their authority and leave evidence to remind us.
